Carmel to Big Sur Road Trip

If you’re a nature enthusiast, Monterey County should be at the top of your travel list. The breathtaking journey from Carmel to Big Sur (or vice versa) promises an unforgettable road trip experience that’s perfect for families and couples alike. While the region is renowned for its romantic allure, it’s also an excellent destination for family getaways. My husband and I, avid travelers with two energetic boys in tow, decided on Carmel Valley Ranch as our base for exploring this enchanting corner of California. Most lodgings in Big Sur cater to adults only, so Carmel Valley Ranch proved to be the ideal choice for a family-friendly adventure.

Our Journey Begins:

In late December 2018, we embarked on a non-stop flight from Austin to San Jose, California (SJC). After landing, we quickly rented a car and embarked on a picturesque one-hour drive to Carmel Valley Ranch. If you’re coming from San Diego, it’s a scenic two-hour drive. The moment we set foot on the resort grounds, we knew we were in for a memorable experience. The ambiance exudes relaxation, serenity, and a deep connection to nature. Planning this trip was a breeze; all we did was book our flight and reserve our lodging. While we didn’t plan many activities in advance, I must note that you should now book the beekeeping experience beforehand, a favorite among our boys. Carmel Valley Ranch is home to 60,000 Italian honeybees, and this hands-on encounter is not to be missed.

Where Luxury Meets Wilderness:

Carmel Valley Ranch’s all-suite accommodations redefine luxury in the midst of nature. We chose a one-bedroom suite and set up a cozy pull-out couch in the living room for our boys. As the concierge aptly described, these suites seamlessly blend the comforts of resort living with the allure of the wild. Every suite boasts a fireplace, perfect for evenings by the fire, and a private deck for stargazing while enjoying a glass of wine from the resort’s own vineyard.

Activities Galore:

The resort offers a diverse range of activities to cater to every interest, from golf, tennis, and horseback riding to swimming, photography classes, hiking, biking, and even cooking classes. The beekeeping experience, which we mentioned earlier, remains a standout. This hands-on lesson in apiculture not only educates but also captivates the young and the young at heart.

Exploring Beyond the Resort:

While Carmel Valley Ranch offers a plethora of activities, don’t miss out on the natural wonders and attractions nearby:

• Bixby Creek Bridge: Capture the iconic beauty of the Bixby Creek Bridge with your camera. The views are nothing short of awe-inspiring.

• Rocky Point Restaurant: Stop for lunch or dinner at Rocky Point Restaurant and savor not only delicious cuisine but also stunning sunset views. Keep an eye out for playful sea otters, dolphins, seals, and migrating whales. (Sad Update: shut down in 2022 after 75 years of business)

Discovering Big Sur:

Big Sur, nestled between Carmel and San Simeon, offers a rugged, unspoiled coastline bordered by the Santa Lucia Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. State Route 1 winds through this region, known for its dramatic twists and turns, seaside cliffs, and fog-kissed coastlines. With numerous state parks, it’s a haven for hiking, camping, and beachcombing enthusiasts.
