The anxiety leading up to my first international trip in the Covid era was high despite the reduced rates we scored at the resort. Upon arrival in Kamalame Cay and after taking precautionary measures, I felt safer at our destination than I did at home.
Over the Christmas holidays, my family and I traveled to Andros Island, Bahamas to the beautiful Kamalame Cay. It’s located on a private island (not open to cruise ships!) off the world’s third largest barrier reef. It is the perfect escape for barefoot beachcombers and ocean adventurers.
Our Bahamas trip was the rejuvenating vacation we all needed. The weather was warm enough to spend all our time outside, including meals. There are no shortage of activities available to keep you engaged in the natural splendor of the island, and with the constant ocean breezes, we never once worried about the risk of exposure to Covid. We had a beach bungalow all to ourselves, and honestly, we only went indoors to sleep and to enjoy the continental breakfast deliveries in the morning!
At Kamalame Cay, you get a little bit of everything: city slickers coming down for a long weekend, couples on honeymoon, families, avid anglers, and the occasional celebrity. What sold the place for me (other than the privacy, beautiful bungalows, and scenery) were the available activities and experiences. You can snorkel and swim in the inland blue holes and enjoy the beauty of the nearby cays and azure waters of the Caribbean.
If you are into fishing, you have hit gold as the biggest bonefish live right here. Anglers can also enjoy two distinct world-class sport fishing options in the crystal waters surrounding Kamalame Cay. And if angling isn’t your thing, there’s also water skiing, wakeboarding, paddle boarding, sea kayaking and plenty of boogie boards to keep you busy.
Spear fishing is also available with an experienced guide. It is not a good fit for young children and is usually advised for guests with free-diving experience. My favorite activities: long walks on the shorelines of the beautiful Bahamian island, extended swim at Captain Bill’s Blue Hole, and tennis with my family. The only negative was seeing some plastic that had washed ashore, though it was a nice reminder to reuse and recycle.
There are inland paths throughout the property. Most guests use a golf cart to get around or bikes you can borrow from the front office. Every room comes with a golf cart to help navigate the property.
It is highly recommended that you use a travel advisor to help navigate transportation between Nassau and Andros. Private charters and boat transfers are available to help get you from Nassau to Andros, but it would have been difficult for us to have booked them on our own.
